Shortage of Police Officers

Its appears Allentown isnt the only police department struggling to get applicants and are short on their manpower.  Bethlehem PD is low on their man power as well.

I spoke to a friend who has been on APD for over ten years and they stated their force will be losing close to 20 officers this year and possibly another 20 or more next year.

I asked is this because they hit the retirement age.  Their response was officers are leaving anywhere from 16 to 25 years on.  Those with prior military can buy up to 5 years of service to put towards their pension.

That does not sound so bad.

My contact stated APD is seeing some rough times.  "Officers dont want to work 25 years anymore.  Most dont stay past 21." I was told in the past most career street officers burned out by year 15.  Now they are seeing officers with as little as 3 years wanting to leave.

"The job isnt fun anymore, I shouldnt say this, but the leaders need to go. They are so out of touch as to what a street officer goes thru since they havent done it in over 20 years. I'd say more than half of the officers want to leave."

I was shocked to hear this but I guess with all the bad publicity APD gets its no wonder.  I think this could however be a trend throughout all law enforcement.

still think the benefits are good and so is the starting pay at around 70k. So why are departments struggling to fill spots?  The days of a shiny badge and carrying a gun must not be that cool anymore.

Im not surprised by what that officer said. The reality is being a cop today isnt worth it. I dont think people want to work at Apd either. Its corrupt.

The white collar crimes committed by there bosses are horrific and many have suffered the wrath of administrators? This is because of all this woke shit being peddled a progressiveness and the way of the future, if I remember correctly GOD'S wrath was dished out to the people in the story of sadom and gamora for being sodomites and having beastiality impulses.

I think it mostly has to do with mindset and pride in serving. Current generations just don’t want to work, are lazy, and look at serving in the military and other uniformed service as reputable. They want to be influencers or highly compensated employees from day one.

Agree with the publisher above. This is a different generation with different work ethic and interests. The blaming the Chief that is ever present on this blog is s becoming nauseating and tired. The chief is a great man who cares about his officers and Allentown. We are lucky to have him as our Chief; despite what a small group of 5-10 combative and miserable officers say.

The truth is that fire and police are very well compensated considering most not having an advanced degree. I know this because I requested the data through RTK. If officers don't want to work after 3 years, bye. I am sure the Chief will thank them for the service and move on to supporting and advancing those who remain.
