Its appears Allentown isnt the only police department struggling to get applicants and are short on their manpower. Bethlehem PD is low on their man power as well.
I spoke to a friend who has been on APD for over ten years and they stated their force will be losing close to 20 officers this year and possibly another 20 or more next year.
I asked is this because they hit the retirement age. Their response was officers are leaving anywhere from 16 to 25 years on. Those with prior military can buy up to 5 years of service to put towards their pension.
That does not sound so bad.
My contact stated APD is seeing some rough times. "Officers dont want to work 25 years anymore. Most dont stay past 21." I was told in the past most career street officers burned out by year 15. Now they are seeing officers with as little as 3 years wanting to leave.
"The job isnt fun anymore, I shouldnt say this, but the leaders need to go. They are so out of touch as to what a street officer goes thru since they havent done it in over 20 years. I'd say more than half of the officers want to leave."
I was shocked to hear this but I guess with all the bad publicity APD gets its no wonder. I think this could however be a trend throughout all law enforcement.
I still think the benefits are good and so is the starting pay at around 70k. So why are departments struggling to fill spots? The days of a shiny badge and carrying a gun must not be that cool anymore.

Im not surprised by what that officer said. The reality is being a cop today isnt worth it. I dont think people want to work at Apd either. Its corrupt.
The white collar crimes committed by there bosses are horrific and many have suffered the wrath of administrators? This is because of all this woke shit being peddled a progressiveness and the way of the future, if I remember correctly GOD'S wrath was dished out to the people in the story of sadom and gamora for being sodomites and having beastiality impulses.
I think it mostly has to do with mindset and pride in serving. Current generations just don’t want to work, are lazy, and look at serving in the military and other uniformed service as reputable. They want to be influencers or highly compensated employees from day one.
Agree with the publisher above. This is a different generation with different work ethic and interests. The blaming the Chief that is ever present on this blog is s becoming nauseating and tired. The chief is a great man who cares about his officers and Allentown. We are lucky to have him as our Chief; despite what a small group of 5-10 combative and miserable officers say.
The truth is that fire and police are very well compensated considering most not having an advanced degree. I know this because I requested the data through RTK. If officers don't want to work after 3 years, bye. I am sure the Chief will thank them for the service and move on to supporting and advancing those who remain.
Your mind is blown if you think 5-10 officers are the problem and the only ones that think Roca is a bum. I recently retired from there.. The chief is not liked. The morale is shit. Roca only cares about himself. He is worse than Chief Alseban . Would you like me discuss his illustrious past and all the coverups under his administration? This is called Allentown Truth isnt it?
Nothing new here.
Dozens left early with full benefits and as little as 12 years of service under Mayor Roy Afflerbock.
(Community Development Director Ed Pawlowski totally agreed with the buyout.)
Institutional members is gone in the formerly All American City.
The Chief of Police is subpar, the Mayor doesn’t rise to the level of subpar.
For the money they get, I'd leave as soon as possible too. Are they paying city tax if they dont live in the city? Do people know when they say, "i pay my taxes, I pay your paycheck, you do what I tell you" that police pay taxes too, which basically means theyre paying their own paycheck? Are they paying into a pension? How much does that that drop their take-home to- assuming they dont die before they retire to enjoy what little they get? Everything these guys do is a gamble, and we expect them to be okay every time they show for work??
The city of Allentown is comprised of the 129 acre NIZ controlled by a Board of Directors under Riley/Browne supervision with the remaining city acreage under the watchful eye of Hashaan Batts of Promise neighborhoods. Don't confuse quality of life issues in Allentown with those of other municipalities in Lehigh and Northampton counties.
Hassan Batts? He stepped down from Promise Neighborhoods. How is he possibly controlling Allentown in any way?
Batts has headed Promise Neighborhoods since 2017 and remains on the board until year end 2025.
Actually, 5-10 was a high estimate. I believe it is really 2-4 disgruntled officers.
You sound so dumb. 2-4 officers out of 200 lmao. Who put you up to comment? Tuerk or Roca? Let me guess, all the guys who sit in parking lots arent disgruntled, and actually want to do the job? Lmao
I am extremely sorry to state that our police are NON POLICING!!! I'm convinced this is by design and the desired result. Witness the speeding speeding with LOUD exhaust systems that I can't LEGALLY affix an inspection sticker to, (licensed for 50 years) and don't get me started on altered suspensions, all of which proliferate in Allentown with little or ZERO ramifications... I have, by the grace of God, not wrecked at intersections where drivers run red lights and stop signs AT SPEED. This begs the question, where actually are our police?????
I could easily name names of the problem
I agree that there are very few unhappy police officers in Allentown. Now, the officers that sit in parking lots are negligent in their duties as Patrolman and should be disciplined or fired immediately.
Your so out of touch. First productivity is a direct reflection of morale. Production goes up as morale does. So all the officers that sit and do nothing, there is a reason. Second good luck disciplining an officer who sits in a parking lot. There are legit felons on the force who arent fired.
