What a long weekend it was for Allentown! Did everyone survive the heat? How about the loud music and the fireworks show?
Allentown’s Fourth of July weekend was overshadowed by the strong storms and dangerous heat that moved through the area. The long weekend to celebrate the great nation's 250th somehow got steamrolled by a tag‑team of strong storms, insane heat that kept most in the AC, and nonstop noise that turned what should’ve been a holiday into a headache.
The storms hit hard, ripping through neighborhoods with heavy rain, sudden gusts, and dangerous lightning. Old city trees snapped; yards flooded, and power flickered across parts of the city. I spent more time checking weather alerts than enjoying the holiday.
Some people were able to celebrate despite the heat and interrupting storms.
The city had its usual weekend with booming music that went late into the night. Between the thunder and the bass, Allentown didn’t get much peace.
A weekend meant for celebration ended up feeling more like a test of endurance. Storm damage, sleepless nights, and a whole lot of frustration. Here’s hoping next year brings more fireworks in the sky and fewer in the atmosphere.
I take off my hat to the Parks and Public Works Departments who are responding to the cleanup. I do not understand why the city waits for the storms to come and cause chaos. They clean up the messes on the roads and let the homeowner deal with the rest. There is no preventive maintenance or proper evaluation of the trees that need attention. Just like with crime. It's all reactive, never proactive.

Incompetence while claiming ignorance is in no way an insurable perils! Responsible parties are designing risk of life catastrophes due to there neglect and lack of knowledge that is just maintenence responsibilities, assklowns.
I didn’t go out the Cedar Beach for the 4th celebration but am curious about the city being proactive in placing out an overabundance of trash receptacles throughout the park ahead of time. I mean, double and triple what would normally be there.
If anyone noticed trashed piled up on ground right against the receptacles, then not enough receptacles were put into position before the festivities. I truly believe people generally WILL make the effort to discard their litter correctly if given plenty of opportunity.
The heat waves will happen with greater frequency and higher temperatures over time this is the result of anthropogenic climate change. Instead of whining like a total BETA Abe you could man up to cut your carbon footprint by using a fan and learning to cycle commute kike Mayor Matt
Trying to sleep was a joke. I get the whole 4th and fireworks which I am fine with, but after like 11pm is a little ridiculous.

The City does have a very proactive Arborist now…. Matt Kuntzman does a great job. He actually had a complete Citywide street tree inventory done. Matt is very proactive having dead and dying trees removed and replaced. Matt is only with the City about 2 years but has worked hard and has made good progress. Best Arborist the City has had in many years.

Shane - You should take a walk through what’s left of West Park.
There are numerous dead or half-dead (standing) trees there, and they didn’t just die in the last week. There are also numerous spots where previously downed trees have not been replaced.
Mind you, this is in one of the premier parks in the city, and it’s not particularly large.
I’d suggest you review the definition of proactive. If the arborist is the best the city’s had in many years, maybe review the definition of best as well.
This arborist knows how to plant with grant funding butt knows nothing about caring for certain types of trees just look at the debris from this little storm? Then there is just out right neglect due to the areas they have demise designs upon and not caring for risk of life factors because of there incompetence while making claims they didn't see that one.
