When managers make fun of employees, the joke is on the culture they’re destroying

Our city government services only work when our hard-working SEIU workers are supported. SEIU employees are the backbone of our city and have historically been given the crumbs left over after greedy Fire and Police take their largest portion of the city pie—these are the ones answering phones, processing paperwork, visiting homes, fixing roads, assisting the public, and keeping systems running.

Sadly, but expectedly our city leadership has chosen not to support them this year during the contract negotiations. I am aware that negotiations are not going well at all. Particularly embarrassing is that the city continues to exploit these employees and give them the least. Knowing what I know about this administration, It is my feeling that they are looking to exploit these employees because they live paycheck to paycheck and can’t afford to strike. I encourage these employees to call Tuerk’s bluff. Lets see how the city works if no one is there for a week.  Make the news. Matter of fact if we strike I will send this post to Fox 29. Lets see how he does with a Strike while he is trying to pass a budget. Show how much we are needed. We deserve more and don’t accept this administration’s consolation prize. Make the city cover the days we strike too. Strike!!!!  Screw it.

What exactly is going on in Matt Tuerk’s administration? It is a direct reflection of the leadership of Matt “Fidel” Tuerk. These SEIU staff are the unsung and unrecognized heroes of our city. While APD and AFD receive all the accolades and compensation for sitting in parking lots and putting out dumpster fires , the SEIU staff show up for pennies, and clearly private ridicule. They deserve more money and better support from their leaders.

Maybe Cabinet could share some of the inflated salaries that they receive?

When you see your boss, tell them Abe says they are a disgrace, and your ashamed to work under them. Look at Chief Agosto and Chief Roca's salaries!! They dont deserve that much. Fire has most of their act together, but police.  Don't get me started. Both departments guys sleep most of their shifts.

Then Police tried to get two part time positions at $71/hr passed for their guys.  What!!! They obviously werent that good at their jobs since the PD has never and will never ever reach it budgeted amount of 232 officers. But they are valuable and we need them Chief Gress tried to sway council.  On Adam's fantasy island maybe.

“When the elite rise too high to see the workers below, they forget who built the ground they stand on.”

My good friend works for the city and was shook when he heard a Director saying that SEIU employees don't manage money and can easily be taken advantage of to get the city a favorable deal because they need their paychecks.
I am disgusted that someone like-this has a job!!

Abe! You are on it! I appreciate your commentary and love how you are exposing the absolute incompetence in this administration. I didn’t know that this city was this poorly run ad certainly did not know the huge salaries of the people helping the mayor drive the city into the ground.

Most importantly, thank you for watching out for our SEIU employees. They should be better taken care of and shame on HR, the mayor, and council for ignoring them over and over again.

Fire received a union contract two years in advance in exchange for money and billboards for Tuerk’s reelection campaign. Quid Pro Quo 101

Yet poor SEIU is suffering for a contract with 20 days left to the expiration

Abe, thank you for standing with us and speaking up when so many are afraid to. Your support means a lot, especially during a time when SEIU workers are being pushed aside and undervalued. We keep this city running day after day, and it makes a real difference when someone recognizes that and isn’t scared to call out the truth.

We’re committed to fighting for a fair contract, fair wages, and the respect every worker deserves. Knowing that you have our back gives us more strength and confidence to stand together. This isn’t just about a negotiation—it’s about dignity, stability, and making sure the city treats all of its workers with the value we’ve earned.

Thank you for using your voice for us. Solidarity goes a long way, and we won’t forget who stood with us when it mattered.

Your very welcome. I want people to feel deserved, appreciated, and compensated for their efforts. What those in charge do not understand is saying I appreciate means shit. Show me. Happy workers, work. Appreciated workers, work. When these things happen, efficiency increases, job related injuries decrease. Why, because people actually want to come to work. I will continue to speak the truth. Good luck.

It is do obvious that this administration will give everything to the fire department and police. The SEIU has always been treated worse than any other city group. We have leaders that do not know how to clearly explain what is expected of us, they lie constantly and disappear once assignments are handed out for the day, go to bars and strip clubs during duty and then try to destroy us every chance they get because they are hiding from their own sneaky ways.
The mayor and this administration look at us as simple people who will cave to the bones they throw at us. They need to remember that we control the passing of a contract and we are not afraid (although they think differently) to strike if needed.
It is about time a message is sent to these leaders and administration and council that we will no longer be the scavengers that pick up the droppings from fire and police. We deserve better pay and definitely deserve respect from management.

What a vile human being!

This persn should be walked through the town Square while everyone yells “shame” and throws dog crap at them.

Imagine if SEIU had minimum staffing, very generous overtime, an amazing pension, and the support that fire and police receive from the administration?

I am extremely annoyed that our city leaders are playing games with taxpayer money to secure their agenda. It seems that mayor introduced an additional $50,000 to the Conference of Churches for the Homeless in tonight's budget discussion.
"a budget memo submitted by the mayor that increases the mayor’s operating budget by $50,000 to support the Conference of Churches in providing an additional day of weekly services for homeless support."

hmm....let me think about this one. Cece is very passionate about the homeless. Mayor Tuerk has been on a spending spree to buy votes. Could Cece be changing her vote to a yes because she has a price and the mayor bought her too?
Sadly, the mayor and council like to play with our tax dollars, yet the SEIU is fighting to 11th hour for respect, fair compensation and the dignity the deserve.

The money is only part of it. My sources tell me the city also wants the ability to change people’s regular schedules whenever they see fit. Meaning they could schedule people anytime they want including Saturdays or Sundays. Which completely eliminates any chance at overtime. So not only will they not pay these people they also want their OT money too. Wow. I couldn’t believe it when I heard that. Greedy

The mayor needs to get a hold of his do nothing office employees schedules first. One in particular apparently contributes nothing to the city yet he keeps promoting them.

Hello Abe, thank you greatly for this well written post you’ve made.

As a current City of Allentown employee I can attest that things are unfair, unappreciated, and down right unethical!

What fires me up is that the poor decisions and investment choices that are made today will all become evident in future. If there isn’t good investment in SEIU Union employees, employee morale will certainly decline. The chances of attracting new qualified talent for SEIU, will drastically decline. No person with a CDL wants to come work for the city for a lousy $20 an hour starting wage.

Unfortunately, by then the Directors, Managers, Mayors, and Council people will have all scurried away free of responsibility. I’d love to see them responsible for their unethical and poor decisions.

Especially with consideration to this current economic atmosphere of inflation we all face. How poorly can they view the Streets, Parks, Traffic, Storm (and others) departments?

If they wanted to negotiate in Good Faith, if their hearts were in the right place, they would have planned accordingly to have some capability to ease the burden on those underpaid and overworked departments. Not reckless spending and saying “oops we don’t have enough again”.

So much more id like to say Abe.

Lastly, all I will say is, if these employees don’t plow the snow off of the road? Will there be any fire truck or police officer coming to your house or anyone else’s?

The back breaking work my coworkers and I endure must be respected going forward.

It’s ridiculous how some top managers are expecting 9 THOUSAND dollars yearly raise this coming year while us Union members barely scrape by when we are the only reason they look good. Why does it take 4 months to fill a position? It’s because no one wants to work here anymore!!

The union leadership in Allentown is also corrupt. You have a union president who’s never actually been elected by anybody and unlike other real unions Do you have no strike fund you have no power.Other locals have a fully funded strike fund to pay their employees if they walk out for the entirety of their strike. Anyone who actually tries to change the union leadership culture here also gets forced out. It’s pretty sad. I can think of a few union stewards who cared. Only to be pushed out if they didn’t go with the flow. I stand here in solidarity with all of you and always remember in the case Of Allentown the grass is always greener on the other side. Also to all you employees there who throw your fellow workers under the bus to keep getting ahead with the snakes that are management there….your time will come.

I love the enthusiasm!

Abe thanks for allowing people to speak up uncensored.

Oh, Danielle Yanek screams at the clerks in APD if they go over a minute of 40 hours. When I worked there she would not allow overtime at all. Would only give privileges to the white people but screw the people of color. They even tried to segregate the white employees from the browns and didn’t want us using the sink. This was a direction from Kim Heffelfinger backed by Danielle. I have the emails to prove it. SEIU employees are treated like shit but if ur white and in police ur usually ok.. unless u really pissed off someone..

Well said. This is exactly the kind of honesty we need right now. Keep speaking up-we're all standing together, and your voice makes a real difference

AS I HAVE SAID TO THEM IN COUNCIL I WAS NOT GONA WRONGFULLY TICKET THE PEOPLE NOR ABUSE. NOR DELETE CITY EMPLOYEES TICKETS I GAVE THEM NOR CITY PROPERTIES. SO IM VERY PEEPS... ALLENTOWN LACKS EMPATHY. THATS WHAT THESE LEADERS BRING.... NOTHING

The City just fired a risk management employee for doing the right thing. Helping those treated like garbage and expose the corrupt members in City Hall including the Mayor, Solicitors Office and a previous Human Resources director. If you speak about corruption, immediately you are subject to retaliation. Each entity of the City is treated poorly by City officials one way or another. Bring back the right people and trim the fat.

Hey SEIU!! If you don’t get a favorable contract deal pile all of the snow in front of Matt Tuerk’s driveway and house. Cover the city Mustang.
